I performed another update of my WordPress installation. At the same time, I had to change the setting for the LatexRender plugin in order to have high quality output of mathematical expressions. The conversion from ps to gif format broke down for an unknown reason. After switching to conversion scheme ps-png, everything works perfectly again. [...]
